About Us

TO BE ONE YOU MUST ASK ONE!In order to become a member of the Grand Lodge of Kentucky you must have two Master Masons vouch for your character and recommend you into our Craft. You also have to be a man, 18 years old or older, of good character, and believe in a God that promotes peace, love, and harmony towards all mankind. These are some of the basic requirements for membership into our Fraternity. MEMBERSHIPTo become a member of this ancient and honorable Fraternity, a man must apply of his own free will and accord and with an open heart. Invitations are not issued to prospective members, nor are members solicited. If a person is interested in joining, he should ask a Masonic friend for more information or contact any Masonic Lodge.Membership is for men, 18 years of age or older, who meet the qualifications and standards of character and reputation, who are of good moral character, and who believe in the existence of a supreme being.A man who wants to join a Lodge must be recommended by two Master Masons in good standing in any Lodge recognized by the Grand Lodge of Kentucky. He must understand that his character will be investigated. After approval by the members of that Lodge, he will be accepted as an applicant for membership in Freemasonry.The doors of Freemasonry are open to men who seek harmony with their fellowman, feel the need for self-improvement and wish to participate in making this world a better place to live.Any man who becomes a Mason is taught a pattern for living - reverence, morality, kindness, honesty, dependability, and compassion. He must be prepared to honor his country, uphold its laws, and respect those in authority. We provide college scholarships to promising young men and women. We contribute to blood banks, fund medical research, and maintain hospitals for crippled and burned children.WHAT IS FREEMASONRY?A band of Brothers linked together by an unbreakable chain of sincere affection, forged link by link through the binding effect of a shared experience in the great lessons taught in the Craft degrees. A Fraternity of morality, founded on the allegorical application of the tools and implements of architecture to the construction of our personalities - buildings of living stone, in the service of one God and mankind. A descendant of the ancient craft of stonemasons, builders of the great cathedrals and churches of the Middle Ages, structures so magnificent that the Holy Church itself declared them to be designed by God alone, as the "[Grand] architect of the universe." Not a religion and offering no promise of salvation, but a Fraternity seeking to teach its membership love for their God and our fellowman, by the practice of the principles of brotherhood, relief, and truth. Not wedded to any one religion, though it requires of its members a belief in a Supreme Being and the Holy Bible always remains open on the altars of its Lodges. It expects of a member devotion to the religion of his choice, believing, above all, that the path to salvation is better left to one's personal conscience rather than to the rigid imposition of beliefs held by others. Masonry is frequently called the "handmaiden of the Church," because the principles it seeks to teach each Brother are common to all the great religious faiths. The Fraternity, by its teachings and examples, seeks to make of every Brother one who is more amenable to the dictates of his religion, whatever it may be. The Brotherhood of Man unites men of all faiths who believe in a Supreme Being and who set aside their differences in the effort to serve Him and their Brethren. Freemasons in North America give over 2.6 million dollars each day to charities in and out of the Fraternity. To relieve the distressed is a duty incumbent on all of us. From the Crippled Children's Hospitals and Burn Centers to the Orphanages and Masonic Homes of our various States, from the Knights Templar Eye Foundation to the specialized charities of the Scottish Rite and Royal Arch Masons, Freemasons freely give of their earnings to help others escape the bonds of poverty, loneliness and despair. Masonry is truly a system of morality, veiled in allegory and teaching men by symbols to better themselves in their religious bodies, their communities, and their families. It gathers under its umbrella men of all faiths, all nations, and all classes without distinction - save that noble distinction, "of who can best work and best agree." Freemasonry is the oldest fraternity in the world based upon the belief in a Supreme Being and the Brotherhood of Man. You're probably wondering why we've named our frequently asked questions section "Ask Hiram."Freemasonry traces its philosophical roots to the Master Mason, Hiram Abiff, the architect of Solomon's Temple.Where did Masonry Originate?Freemasonry is the oldest fraternity in the world based upon the belief in a Supreme Being and the Brotherhood of Man. No one knows just how old it is because the actual origins have been lost in time. Freemasonry probably arose from the guilds of stonemasons who built the castles and cathedrals of the middle ages. They were possibly influenced by groups such as the Knights Templar, an order of Christian warrior monks formed in 1118 to help protect pilgrims making trips to the Holy Lands.In 1717 Masonry was created as a formal organization in England when the first Grand Lodge was founded. A Grand Lodge is the administrative body in charge of Masonry in a geographical area. In the United States there is a Grand Lodge for each state and the District of Columbia. In Canada, there is a Grand Lodge for each province. Local organizations of Masons are called Lodges. There are about 13,200 Masonic Lodges in the United States.Why do Masons wear aprons?The apron is an emblem of innocence and the badge of a Mason. It's moral application is is explained to a Mason during it's presentation. It has been cherished by the rich, the poor, heads of state, and common laborers. It is his for life, he has therefore been cautioned to take it home and store it safely as he will never receive another. It is not necessary for a Mason to take his apron to the Lodge as linen aprons are provided for meetings. Its sole function now is to beplaced upon him at his death if his nearest living relative chooses.Are Freemasons a secret society?Contrary to common belief, Masonry is not a secret society, but rather a society with secrets. Masonry has many traditions and customs known only to its members. If it were a secret society Masons would not openly display their membership by wearing jewelry with Masonic symbols, marking their Lodges, or making other public displays of membership. Why do Masons call each other Brother?Brother is a title indicating that one Mason has been recognized by another. The title dates back to ancient times and is used in place of Mr., Dr., or other titles to which one is entitled by virtue of his station in life. In Masonry, all men are equal. No man is regarded for his worldly wealth or honor and all distinctions are cast away. One Mason may engage another with the title Brother, demonstrating this equality even if one is a head of state and the other is a common laborer.My grandfather was a Mason, but he didn't have a Masonic funeral: Why?Every Master Mason in good standing with his Lodge at the time of his death is entitled to Masonic services, including a Masonic burial. (Masonic burials are seldom used, but are available.) The Lodge will not solicit a request for Masonic services, but will make the proper gestures by dispatching condolences and wait to hear if it can be of any service to the family. The services will be rendered only upon the request of the deceased Master Mason's next of kin.Who do I contact if a Master Mason in my family becomes ill or dies?A Master Mason's dues card bears his Lodge's name and his Grand Lodge. By checking the telephone book or making an Internet search you will be able to find telephone contact number(s) for his Lodge. Masons are soldiers, such as Douglas MacArthur, Omar Bradley, and Hap Arnold; businessmen, among them Ransom Olds and Henry Ford; entertainers, including John Wayne, Gene Autry and Roy Clark; in addition to these, astronauts Wally Schirra and John Glenn. We've mentioned a few famous Masons here.There is one more we'd like to mention. You may not know his name, but you may be familiar with an important part of his life.Elisha Hunt Rhodes entered the Civil War as a private in Company D, 2nd Rhode Island Volunteer Infantry. By the end of the war, he had risen to the rank of Brigadier General in command of the Rhode Island State Militia. The diary he kept during the war was used extensively in the Ken Burns documentary The Civil War.An excerpt from his diary describes the strength of the bond of Brotherhood among Masons. He wrote that he witnessed a group of Union soldiers retrieve the body of a fallen Confederate soldier from the field and give it a proper burial because the fallen Confederate was a Brother Mason.Rhodes was so moved by the event that he petitioned Harmony Lodge #9 in Pawtuxet Village, now part of Cranston, within the year. He served as Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations in 1893-1894.
